N is for...
Naan: An oven baked flat bread often served with curries. The most popular version in the UK originates from South Asia.
Nachos: A basic dish of tortilla chips smothered in melted cheese. For a more substantial munch refried beans and salsa can be added.
Nasturtium: A garden plant with many edible parts. Its leaves and petals have a flavour that is similar to watercress. The flower buds and seeds, picked when soft and pickled in vinegar, can be used as a substitute for capers.
Neapolitan: Anything that originates from the city or province of Naples in Italy, including Fabio Cannavaro and a block of ice cream with three
flavours, chocolate, strawberry and vanilla, in the same container. Although tempting, it will make you very unpopular if you just take your favourite flavour out of the tub.
Nectarine: A smooth skinned peach.
Nettles: See 10 things about...
Niacin: Also known as Vitamin B3, found in many foods, including yeast extract, peanuts, wholemeal bread, mushrooms, sesame seeds and useful for producing energy, maintaining a healthy skin and nervous system.
Noodles: Pasta, sometimes made with added egg, usually thin and spaghetti-like but can also be crafted into a variety of sizes.
Nori: Thin, dried seaweed sheets often used as a wrap in sushi, can also be crumbled and sprinkled on soups and sa
lads.
Nougat: A chewy, sweet, confection usually made with nuts, syrup, sugar, honey and egg whites but not always suitable for vegetarians. A favourite with the sweet-toothed everywhere (but not their dentists!)
Nun’s beads: Small fried pastries usually filled with cheese.
Nutmeg: A hard edible seed, grated and used as a spice in sweet and savoury meals, but always be careful to not put too much in!
Nutrients: A common term for vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, protein and fats. Some nutrients provide energy, others are essential for the growth and maintenance of our bodies.
