Survey by Ella Fradgley

Ella Fradgley was 7 years old when she completed this survey of her classmates in year 3 at St Michael In The Hamlet Primary School, Liverpool, to coincide with National Vegetarian Week 2007. She hoped that those who took part in the survey would see the results and reconsider their eating habits. She would like to thank her headteacher, Paul Fleming, who encouraged her to do the survey.

Ella commented that “the results of the survey are interesting, yet as a vegetarian they are slightly disappointing… because they reveal that not many children in my class are vegetarian! I think a lot of the children haven’t thought about why they eat meat so the survey was good to make them think about what they eat and where meat comes from. Maybe if children knew you could get vegetarian foods like vegetarian sausages, burgers and soya mince they would like the taste of these better than the taste of meat.”

She would like to repeat this exercise again next year to see if there are any more changes in her class because since doing this survey one of her friends has become a young veggie! “It was definitely worth doing the survey for that reason alone” added Ella.
