Getting Fruity (and Veggie!)

As part of their work during National Vegetarian Week students at Clatterford Tuition Centre in Newport, Isle of Wight each created an individual fabric square representing a fruit or vegetable using collage techniques, fabric paint or fabric pens. These were then sewn together to create a wall hanging which is now proudly displayed in their Food Technology Room.

Calling all young veggie film makers!

If you’re a student involved in making films and are struggling to find a decent soundtrack to accompany them, it might be worth having a look at Moby's website

Here you’ll find music from Moby that is available to all independent and non-profit filmmakers, film students, and anyone in need of free music for their independent, non-profit film, video, or short. If you want to use any of the music in a commercial film or short then you can also apply for an easy license, with any money that's generated being given to the Humane Society in the US.

This poem from Alex Mills was a recent winner in Animal Aid’s nationwide youth art and poetry competition which asked for submissions on the theme of factory farming.

Dear Diary...

Dear Diary...
I couldn’t sleep last night,
Too many thoughts inside my head,
Swirling round.
I swayed from side to side instead,
Slowly, rhythmically, it’s relaxing,
And makes me feel safe.

Dear Diary...
Someone stopped and looked at me today,
I made them stop and think,
For a while.
It was a young one, as you might expect,
Not too bad as they go,
Seemed to understand me.

Dear Diary...
I feel daft writing this,
Ok, thinking it. I feel like a traitor,
Like them.
You can’t trust any of them,
The others always say,
If only they knew.

Dear Diary...
The others don’t think like me,
They don’t seem to think much at all,
As far as I can tell.
All they want to do is eat,
It’s sad but true,
Sometimes, I feel so powerless.

Dear Diary...
I don’t sleep much nowadays,
There’s scarcely the room to in here,
But when I do sleep, oh, the dreams I have.
Green grass, fresh air, a blazing sun,
Too joyous for words. I never want to wake up,
I always do.

Dear Diary...
I can’t help thinking there must be something more to life,
Something better, something beyond this dark and lonely stall,
Is that so wrong?
The sty is restless today, the others are grunting,
I’ve never understood why they make that noise,
It ’s so human.

Dear Diary…
I mustn’t daydream for too long today,
The others have told me we’re leaving,
We’re going out!
I’ve never been out before, it’s a dream come true,
I’ll have to go now, but when we get back,
I’ll tell you all about it …

I am a veggie
How about you
Pig and sheep I won’t eat you
I’ll have some pasta
With veg inside,
While my friend will have beef outside
My family helps
We’re all the same
But for some we’re just insane
Become a Veggie
Just like me
It ’s just as easy as ABC!

When I say that I’m a veggie

When I say that I’m a veggie the people they look at me strange,
When I say that I ’m a veggie the people they stay out of range.

When I say that I’m a veggie the people they say how do you live?
When I say that I’m a veggie they feel that they need to forgive.

When I say that I’m a veggie the people say what do you eat?
When I say that I’m a veggie the people say don’t you eat meat?

When I say that I’m a veggie the people say do you eat lettuce?
When I say that I’m a veggie at barbies they always forget us.

When I say that I’m a veggie they think I come down from the moon.
When I say that I’m a veggie they think I sip soup with a spoon.

When I say that I’m a veggie they say man needs meat to survive,
When I say that I’m a veggie they say how can you still be alive?

When I say that I’m a veggie I probably eat better than you,
When I say that I’m a veggie and my veggie is far more than two.

When I say that I’m a veggie my food is class one cordon bleu
When I say that I’m a veggie and it’s you that belong in a zoo.

When you too can say you’re a veggie you too will then understand
The world was created for sharing all life to walk on this land.

I don’t know if our lord was veggie, he created us plenty to eat,
Fruit and nuts nature’s best and I’m sure it did not include meat.

John
